WATCH – Muslims rejoice as Azaan echoes from London’s iconic Tower Bridge

LONDON: In a momentous turn of events, Azaan echoes across England’s capital from iconic Tower Bridge as the sunset over on the last Friday of Ramadan – the most sacred month of the Islamic year.

The historic prayer to call was echoed amid the interfaith virtual iftar. The event was hosted by Tower Hamlet Homes, East London Mosque, London Muslim Center, and Tower Hamlets Interfaith Forum.

Kazi Shafiqur Rahman, a British Bangladeshi who is an entrepreneur by profession, performed the Maghrib Azaan in the style of Grand Mosque’s head muezzin, Sheikh Ali Ahmad Mulla. Rahman can be seen donning traditional Saudi attire.

Speaking about the honor to perform Azaan in Britain’s capital, Rahman said ‘I am just an ordinary individual and for me to be blessed with such an opportunity is humbling’.

He also posted the historic moment on his official handle. ‘Alhamdulillah all praise be to Allah for honouring me to call the #Azaan on #TowerBridge for the first time in history on Friday Evening. Thanks to FokrulHoque for putting this together and inviting me for a second time, he captioned the post.

Report of Arab News suggests that Rahman has been performing the Azan for more than two decades but this is the second time he had delivered it at an iconic London location. Earlier, he performed Azaan in Canary Wharf – London’s financial district.

He also confessed to being nervous as he wants to live up to expectations. Adding that, he also reminds himself that he is doing this for the sake of Allah almighty.
