Two Pakistani Diplomats caught Stealing on Camera in South Korea

SEOUL: Two members of the Pakistan’s embassy staff in South Korean capital have caused embarrassment to the country after they were reportedly caught shoplifting in the Yongsan district.

In its report on Monday, The Korea Times suggested that the Pakistani diplomats allegedly stole chocolates and a hat worth 11,000 won (USD 10) and 1,900 won (USD 1.70) respectively.

The matter came to light when an employee at the store lodged a complaint with Yongsan police after the items were found missing or stolen.

The local law enforcers then started the investigation and the accused were caught through a CCTV footage. The police identified the hat picker as a 35-year-old Pakistani diplomat.

The Korean police noted that the shop owner did not want to proceed further as a colleague of the diplomat paid for the stolen item.

Both of the accused also hold diplomatic immunity in the foreign country under the Vienna Convention.

In 2018, the Pakistani government had suspended a grade-20 official of the Ministry of Industries on disciplinary grounds after he was found stealing the wallet of a visiting foreign dignitary.

Zarar Haider Khan, from Economic Affairs Division (EAD) group of the civil service, was serving as the joint secretary at the Ministry of Industries

The officer’s identity had come to surface after a video went viral on social media showing him fishing the wallet of one of the visiting Kuwaiti dignitaries in his pocket while they were away. It is said the dignitary was a member of the Kuwaiti delegation visiting Pakistan to discuss business and trade with the new government at a local hotel.
