Taliban seize 3bn of Pakistani currency from Pak-Afghan border check post

KABUL: At least three billion of Pakistani currency has been seized by the Taliban from the Spin Boldak area of Kandahar after the insurgents captured the key border crossing amid continuing sweeping gains made since foreign forces stepped up their withdrawal from the war-torn country.

Reports in local media quoting sources claimed that the massive amount was stored by Afghan officials as they used to take bribes from smugglers, while the Afghan security forces along with the National Directorate of Security [Afghan intelligence agency] used the dirty money to fund militants to carry out terror attacks in Pakistan.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid also released a statement on Wednesday claiming the takeover of a border town called Wesh in Kandahar. With the recent development, the important crossing between Boldak and Chaman and Kandahar customs has come under Mujahideen control.

Mujahid also assured the traders and residents there that their ‘security is guaranteed’ amid their rule.

An international news agency quoting a local administration official confirmed the Taliban’s presence at the Afghan border along with Pakistan in Chaman while no Afghan officials were spotted around the Afghan border side.

Here’s the clip which showed the white flag of the Taliban, which refers to Afghanistan as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. The militants also replaced the Afghanistan flag in the other regions of the country.

On the other hand, the security forces of Pakistan didn’t negate the Taliban seizure. A Pakistani security official also spoke to an international publication, without giving personal details. ‘The Taliban has taken control of the Afghan side of the Chaman-Spin Boldak border crossing and Pakistani officials are well aware of the development’, he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistani newspaper Dawn also approached Chaman Assistant Commissioner Arif Kakar who that ‘security was on high alert while the Friendship Gate at the Chaman border has been closed’ while Pakistan hasn’t released any officials statement regarding the capturing of the crossing.

The capture of the Pak-Afghan crossing follows days of heavy skirmishes across Kandahar province.

Experts assumed the whole development as a gesture of the Afghan Taliban to neighboring states to take them seriously as they attempting to control the economic chokepoints of the war-raged country.

The move comes to pressurize the ‘US friendly’ incumbent setup besides the local residents in these territories.

Following the withdrawal of NATO troops, the militants continued with their onslaught against the Afghan authorities as they have captured at least 85 percent of the Afghan land. The militants have launched a prevalent offensive across Afghanistan since early May when US-led foreign forces began their final withdrawal of troops. Since then, the Taliban have captured at least three other crossings along the borders with Iran, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
