Shilpa Shetty’s husband arrested for ‘creating, publishing’ pornography

MUMBAI – Celebrated business tycoon and husband of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty’s, Raj Kundra has been arrested for allegedly creating and broadcasting pornographic films online.

Kundra, 45, has been apprehended by the police in India’s financial capital for being a ‘key conspirator’ in the distressing incident – six years after he was banned over match-fixing charges.

Reports in Indian media quoted officials said Crime Branch officers apprehended him after being booked under IPC sections 292 and 293 (related to obscene and indecent advertisements and displays), 420 (cheating), 34 (common intention), besides relevant sections of the IT Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

“There was a case registered with the Crime Branch in February about the creation and publishing of pornographic films through apps and we have arrested Kundra in this case and he appears to be the key conspirator”,  Indian media reported quoting Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale.

An investigation officer while speaking with a media publication acknowledged having sufficient evidence against the business tycoon. Kundra, who is part of the dirty business, used to send pornographic material to foreign companies through a file-sharing service which was then uploaded on multiple applications via platforms to dodge Indian law, he alleged.

In the meanwhile, Raj was produced at a court in Mumbai where the judge has approved his remand till July 23. Sources also revealed that Kundra’s interrogation could lead to more arrests while he could face five to seven years in jail.

Shilpa’s husband was earlier banned for life from all cricket activities, in wake of his involvement in match-fixing in the Indian Premier League.

A report quoting Mumbai police official also confirmed detaining another racket involved in the duping actors in the guise of giving them chance for OTT platforms while in reality they were instead made to act in porn films.

It is worth noting that the second most populous state has rigorous laws against the creation and dissemination of porn films while watching pornography in private is reportedly legal.

Canadian-owned pornography website Pornhub claimed that India was its third-largest source of traffic in 2018 – behind only the US and Britain.
