Rags to riches: Jobless factory worker ‘Khaby’ Lame set to dethrone top Tiktoker as he hits 100m followers

LONDON: Khabane ‘Khaby’ Lame, a 21-year-old lad who lost his job in wake of the Covid pandemic, has now become the second person to reach 100 million followers on the video-sharing platform TikTok.

Recently, the boy makes it to leading publications around the globe as another success story of social media influencer who surpassed Addison Rae to become the second-most-followed person on TikTok. The viral sensation now aimed to soar past Charli D’Amelio – the most followed Tiktoker with nearly 120 million followers.

Analytics giant SocialBlade stated that the current follow rate of Lame’s account is around eight times faster than the top Tiktoker.

Khaby, who hailed from West African country Senegal, breaks the internet with his short clips in which he reacts to some of the internet’s weirdest life hacks, making hilarious content and that’s all without speaking a word.

A report of an international publication cited that he had moved to the northern Italian industrial town of Chivasso, where he got unemployed after losing a job as a factory worker following the Covid pandemic.

His dad reportedly forced him to apply for another job but he decided to spend his time on social sites and started posting videos which makes him a quick triumph.

The hilarious yet deadpan facial expressions are one of the things that make Lame an overnight sensation, the TikTok star never spoke in any of the clips besides shrugging to the camera on daily tasks videos. His clips often show him standing in front of the camera with funny looks besides sarcastically providing easy hack to a difficult situation.

Another reason for his massive following is the simplicity of his videos as on the other hand content creators used the best possible production setups with the latest cameras and perfect lighting, while the Senegalese-Italian creator remained old school. He mostly records his videos with natural lighting without using in-depth editing.

As for now, he had staggering 1.5 billion likes on TikTok while his most-watched clip has garnered over 158 million views. The household name on a world Chinese-owned platform has reportedly a net worth between $1.3 and $2.7 million.

Speaking with a British daily, he said “It’s my face and my facial expressions that make people laugh, he terms his facial expressions as a ‘global language’.

Amid his rising popularity, fans of young TikToker have also created a fan club on his names. He has 33 million followers on Instagram and 70,000 on his Twitter handle.
