The country’s largest city and the twelfth largest metropolis in the world Karachi has been named among the 10 least liveable cities in the world, the Global Liveability Index 2021 report cited.
The annual report shared by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a London-based forecasting, economic research, and analysis, ranked the world’s least and most liveable cities. Karachi, the country’s premier industrial and financial center, shared the spot with Bangladesh capital Dhaka in the Asia-Pacific region – which is ranked as the fourth worst.
The EIU ranks 140 cities every year while it has a number of factors including basic healthcare, living standards, crime, transport infrastructure, access to education along with political and economic stability.
Despite covid-19 impact elsewhere, very little has changed at the bottom of the global rankings:

The 2021 Index ranked Karachi as 134th on the list, the seventh-worst city in the world only managing to rank better than Damascus, Lagos, Port Moresby, Algiers, Dhaka, and Tripoli while other metropolis included in the list include Caracas, Douala, and Harare.
Ranked on 134th position, the overall rating of Sindh’s capital out of 100, which EIU stated was ideal, was 36.2, its stability rating was 20, healthcare 33.3, culture and environment 33.3, education 58.3 and 51.8 for infrastructure. The city’s ranking has improved just minimal as it was listed in the 137th position earlier in 2018.
Meanwhile, Australian, Japanese, and New Zealand cities performed best in the Global Liveability Index 2021 due to better handling of the novel Covid pandemic.
Auckland topped the list of liveability rankings while Japan’s Osaka holds second place. The top two cities were followed by Adelaide, Wellington, and Tokyo.
European and Canadian countries performed poorly in this latest edition as Vienna, the world’s most liveable city, fell to the 12th rank. Hamburg of Germany ranked the biggest mover as it dropped from 34th to 47th.
