Pakistan President joins TikTok for a noble cause

ISLAMABAD – Jumping on the bandwagon of the recent wave of the video-sharing platform, the president of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi has decided to ‘spread the message of positivity and motivation for the youth of Pakistan’ via the in trend medium.

As the development rolled out, people are now expecting no more TikTok bans as the short video app has already been restricted in the South Asian country three times in a row.

Meanwhile, the announcement was made on the official Twitter of the President. A recent post shared on July 16 reads “The President of Pakistan is now on TikTok!” while a short clip has also been posted on the president’s account already – a glimpse of a speech that the PTI leader made in the past.

“I am a dreamer of Pakistan who sees a ray of light in everything – take an interest this is your country to build,” Alvi can be heard saying in the debut clip.

Here’s how netizens reacted to the development:

With the country’s President on board, TikTokers are now expecting no ban from the government or the court as earlier, the Sindh High Court ordered the third and recent ban on the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform over ‘immoral content’ and for promoting LGBTQ-Pride Month.

Tiktok was initially blocked in the South Asian country last year in October over the same issue content. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority said it had issued a final notice to the video-sharing app and gave considerable time to respond and develop and an effective mechanism for ‘proactive moderation of unlawful online content.’

The ban was, later, reversed after a week. The PTA spokesperson said the TikTok management has assured the authority that it will block all accounts repeatedly involved in spreading obscenity and immorality and moderate content in accordance with local laws.

The platform was then blocked for the second time on the high court’s orders earlier this year. “In respectful compliance to the orders of the Peshawar High Court, PTA has issued directions to service providers to immediately block access to the TikTok App,” a tweet of PTA cited. The ban was later revoked within a month.
