Oxygen leak kills 22 Covid patients at Indian hospital as country battles second deadly wave (VIDEO)

NASIK: Disruption in the supply of life-saving gas has killed at least 22 critical coronavirus patients in a hospital in India’s Maharashtra state.

The terrible incident added to the woes of Maharashtra, which reported its highest ever single-day spike in Covid deaths. Critical patients who were on ventilators at the hospital have died, reports in international media suggest.

According to the officials, an oxygen tanker leaked outside a hospital halted the supply for about half an hour. The tanker leaked while the storage units were being refilled.

According to a local police officer, who rushed to the site, said the leak occurred in a pipe connecting the oxygen supply to the main tank in the hospital complex. In the footage of the awful incident, white fumes spreading in the hospital area, causing panic.

Meanwhile, authorities have announced an investigation into the incident and further investigations are underway.

The south Asian country has recorded at least 1 million infections in three days, with 346,786 new cases overnight into Saturday. The officials say they are deploying trains and the air force to transport supplies to hard-hit areas.

The World Health Organization (WHO), termed the situation in India as a devastating reminder of what the novel virus could do.
