Noam Chomsky’s Wife Denies Death Reports, Confirms He Is Recovering at Home

In an emailed response to The Associated Press, Valeria Chomsky confirmed, “No, it is false.

” Noam Chomsky, aged 95, had been hospitalized in Brazil, recovering from a stroke he suffered a year ago. Last week, Valeria told the AP that Chomsky was hospitalized, but on Tuesday, the Beneficencia Portuguesa hospital in Sao Paulo announced he had been discharged to continue his treatment at home.

Earlier on Tuesday, Chomsky’s name trended on X due to the spread of these false death reports. Jacobin and The New Statesman both published obituaries for Chomsky. Jacobin later amended its headline from “We Remember Noam Chomsky” to “Let’s Celebrate Noam Chomsky,” while The New Statesman removed an essay by former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis. The Brazilian news site Diario do Centro do Mundo also retracted its announcement of Chomsky’s death and issued a correction.

The Chomskys have resided in Brazil since 2015. Noam Chomsky, renowned for his critiques of U.S. foreign policy, taught for many years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2017, he joined the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
