London Mayor Sadiq Khan secures second term in a ‘tighter than expected race’

LONDON – Pakistani origin Sadiq Khan has been re-elected as mayor of London after defeating his opponent Shaun Bailey of the Conservative Party.

The victory of the Pakistani immigrant bus driver’s son was dubious on the first day of counting as he had a lead of 24,267. Later, it became clear that the 50-year-old was leading in most of the outstanding areas. Turnout remained around 42 percent – lesser than the previous elections.

The former social activist won by 55.2 percent while the conservative candidate remained runner up with 44.8 percent. Khan bagged the much-anticipated polls with a less margin as compared to the previous polling. In the year 2016, Khan became the first Muslim mayor of an EU capital city by setting record votes.

Clinching the victory in the recent polls, he said ‘I grew up as a working-class boy, a child of immigrants, but I’m now the mayor of London he said, describing himself as a Londoner through and through.

I will always be a mayor for all Londoners, working to improve the lives of every single person in this city. The results of the elections around the UK show our country, and even our city remains deeply divided’. Adding that, ‘the scars of Brexit have yet to heal. A crude culture war is pushing us further apart.

He also ensures that London will play its part in national recovery and to build a brighter greener and more equal future for the capital.

British media claims that Khan’s victory will be a spark for the Labour party as it suffered in recent polls.
