France Votes To Ban Hijab Below Age 18

PARIS: French lawmakers Tuesday have voted to ban the wearing of the Hijab, a religious veil worn by Muslim women, in public places for those under 18.

Ban on burkinis in public pools, and ban the wearing of the hijab for those accompanying minors on school trips is on the anvil which is certainly an Islamophobia problem.

The voting however does not make the proposal into law but they do reflect the majority sentiment of the French upper house. The votes will need to be confirmed by the National Assembly to become official law.

The French senators who voted to ban Hijab for under 18 believe in the anti-separation bill which barred conspicuous religious sign by minors and of any dress or clothing which would signify an inferiorisation of women over men being worn in public.

French right-wing politician, Bruno Retailleau, stated the hijab as a ‘sexist symbol’ and a marker of the submission of women, and the banner of separatism. Stressing the need to ban it, the 60-year-old said each time we proposed to implement this, the government-backed down.

The anti-Muslim lawmaker believed that veil is not just a piece of cloth as it characterises the claim of the Islamist ideologists to impose on us a counter-society. The veil is already restricted in French schools.

On the other hand, Amnesty International has condemned the bill and said that it opposes and attacks people’s rights and freedoms, especially Muslims.

Amnesty’s researcher Perolini, while slamming the French authorities, mentioned that we have seen the authorities in France use the vague and ill-defined concept of ‘radicalisation’ or ‘radical Islam’ to justify the imposition of measures without valid grounds, which risks leading to discrimination in its application against Muslims and other minority groups.

It is to be noted that The Republic has nearly doubled down on anti-Muslim policies and this is the latest in the series.

Last month in March, Switzerland banned burqas being worn in public places after a referendum passed the anti-Muslim agenda with a 51% majority.
