Finland’s Prime Minister faces probe for paying $365 breakfast bill ‘using taxpayers’ money’

HELSINKI: Finland’s Prime Minister and Democratic Party leader Sanna Marin Friday has landed herself in hot waters after the police announced to probe the alleged usage of state revenue for breakfast.

Report of Finland tabloid, Iltalehti, suggests that the family of PM mishandled taxpayer’s money to purchase foodstuff delivered to her residence. The reported amount is said to be around $365 per month.

The report claimed that the incumbent PM used these services more than any predecessor. Meanwhile, the receipts for the procured items are concealed from the general public in a bid to protect the family’s privacy.

Amid all the criticism and trolling, the 35-year-old Marin justified the act saying that she didn’t ask for the service and all predecessors used the service. ‘As prime minister, I have not asked for this benefit nor been involved in deciding on it,” Marin said on Twitter adding that she welcomes the probe and will cease claiming the benefit while it is looked into.

Meanwhile, the office of PM also mentioned section 6 of the Finnish act on ministers’ pay and allowances that allows purchasing food with state revenues. ‘The prime minister is provided with housing in a state-owned building and the State is responsible for the costs incurred due to its maintenance, heating, lighting, and furnishings, plus the necessary staff’, the section cited.

Police on Friday announced an inquiry into a possible public-office offense, after receiving a request to probe the matter. A statement issued from state law enforcers stated ‘The prime minister has been reimbursed for some meals, even though the wording of the law on ministerial remuneration does not appear to permit this’.
