Afghan envoy’s daughter abducted, tortured before being freed in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD/KABUL: Silsila Alikhil, the daughter of Afghanistan’s ambassador to Pakistan Najibullah Alikhil, was abducted and tortured for several hours by unidentified assailants, the Afghan government claimed Saturday.

Reports in local news quoting the Afghan Foreign Office said that the daughter of the Afghan envoy to Pakistan was abducted for several hours on Friday while she was on her way home.

The incident occurred in daylight near Rana Market, Islamabad. The minor girl suffered blows to her head had rope marks on her wrists and legs. She was later released in F-9 Park, local media quoting law enforcers said.

Meanwhile, the Afghan envoy Najibullah Alikhil also shared a picture of his daughter after a picture of another woman was shared on different social media platforms.

“Yesterday my daughter was kidnapped from Islamabad and beaten heavily, but by Allah blessing escaped. She feels better now”, he wrote in a tweet.

Soon after the incident, Prime Minister Imran Khan took notice and directed the immediate arrest of culprits involved in the abduction of Ms. Alikhi.

The premier directed Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed to utilize all resources to apprehend the culprits. Islamabad Police and other law enforcement agencies must investigate the incident at the earliest, bring up the truth of the matter, Khan told Rashid.

Pakistan Foreign Office while commenting on the matter said “the Islamabad police had launched a thorough investigation as soon as the disturbing incident surfaced on Friday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant security authorities are closely in contact with the ambassador and his family and extending full support in the matter”, it added.

“The security of the ambassador and his family had been beefed up and law enforcement agencies were trying to trace and apprehend the culprits”, it reiterated saying “the safety and security of the diplomatic missions, as well as the diplomats and their families, is of utmost importance and such incidents can and will not be tolerated.”

On the other side, the Afghan officials while condemning the heinous attack expressed their concerns over the safety and security of diplomats and their families in Pakistan. Meanwhile, the victim is under medical surveillance at a state-run medical facility.

In the press release further released from the Afghan Foreign Office, It stated that “the officials also calls on the Government of Pakistan to take immediate necessary actions to ensure full security of the Afghan Embassy and Consulates as well as the immunity of the country’s diplomats and their families in accordance with international treaties and conventions.”

Following the development, the Afghan FO summoned the Pakistani Ambassador to Kabul Mr. Mansoor Ahmad Khan and lodged a strong protest over the abduction of the daughter of Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Islamabad.

Afghanistan asked the Pakistani envoy to convey the strong protest and deep concerns of the Government of Afghanistan besides identifying and detaining perpetrators.

It is worth noting that the incident comes following the postponement of the key conference to be hosted by Pakistan over the political consensus on the Afghan conflict after the Afghan officials refused to send their delegation. It has been postponed until after Eidul Adha [with no confirmed date].
