‘A Man before His Time’ – PU pays tribute to Prof Dr Mughees uddin Sheikh on first death anniversary

LAHORE: The first death anniversary of Prof Dr. Mughees Uddin Sheikh, a journalism pioneer, and a renowned educationist, was marked by a seminar organized by the Institute of Communication Studies on Tuesday.

A number of scholars, top journalists, intellectuals, and students turned up at Hameed Nizami Hall to honor Dr. Mughees who holds the title of establishing the Institute of Communication Studies of Punjab University.

The list of eminent guests includes Mujeeb ur Rehman Shami, Salman Ghani, Sajjad Mir, Prof Dr. Muhammad Nizam Uddin, Director ICS Dr. Noshina Saleem, Dr. Shahid Soroya, Dr Zahid Bilal, Dr Aslam Dogar, Senior journalist Taseer Mustafa and Ali Tahir Mughees [son].

The authorities of the oldest public university in Pakistan also honored the contributions of Mr. Sheikh and named the main block after him while three of the documentaries were also played to mark the contributions of Dr. Mughees.

During the event, two of the shining students, a girl of BS Honours along with a boy of M.Phil, of the Communications department have been awarded Dr. Mughees Uddin Sheikh Scholarship under the need-based learning initiative from the family of the late professor. The family also offered the scholarship to a primary student of Arif High School Lahore – the primary educational institution of Dr. Mughees.

Speaking at the honorary ceremony, Chief Editor of Daily Pakistan Mujeeb ur Rehman Shami said that Dr. Mughees, former dean of PU, was an educationist by birth who continued to teach till his last days. Commending the legacy of literary genius, he said Dr. Mughees produced top journalists of Pakistan who not only contributed in Pakistan but inspired at the international level. Primetime news analyst Shami also urged the academians to play their role for the prosperity of the country.

Senior analyst Salman Ghani also paid tribute to the late Dr. Mughees. Mr. Sheikh not only reformed technical education in Pakistani journalism but he also trained the ideological side of his students, he added.

Renowned journalist Sajjad Mir termed the services of Dr. Mughees as ‘forever remembered’. Mir revealed that he was the first senior professor who shed light on the topic of social media. Dr. Mughees was an expert at quite a lot of dimensions of modern media – especially research methodology.

Prof. Dr. Mohammad Nizamuddin said that Dr. Mughees will always be remembered for his contributions to journalism. He termed the methods of Dr. Mughees as trends-setters that contributed to uplifting the ICS department.

Dr. Mughees played a key role in providing the best human resource to the media industry, said Director ICS Dr. Noshina Saleem. Adding that, his instructions and guidelines would be followed to nurture the School of Communication Studies. Ali Tahir Mughees, son of the celebrated academician, also expressed gratitude in the ceremony.

Dr. Mughees Uddin Sheikh, known for his work on Islamophobia, American media during War and Middle East Affairs was born in the Punjab capital in the year 1951. He earned his Master’s degree (MA) from Punjab University (1976) and MA (Political Science), Punjab University (1977) and earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communication (1993) and Master (MA) in Journalism (1991) from the University of IOWA, USA. He was bestowed upon John F Murray Award (USA). He also penned over 50 research papers internationally.

Dr. Mughees started his teaching career in 1976 at the Department of Mass Communication Gomal University as a lecturer. He was awarded Fellowship Salzburg Seminar (Austria) and a recipient of Presidential Award Izaz-i-Fazeelat and University Best Teacher Award by Higher Education Commission.

He served as Director of the Institute of Communication Studies, Punjab University, and undisputedly recognized as the mentor of the majority of qualified Pakistani media personalities. He joined PU in 1982 and served there for 28 years. He was appointed as the Chairman of the Department in 2003. Dr. Sheikh joined Superior University as Dean of the Department of Mass Communication Management Studies. He also served as Dean Media and Commutation Studies, University of Management and Technology (UMT).

He was first elected President of Pakistan Media Educators Council and a member of the Board of Studies of all the major universities of Pakistan.

He was Dean of Faculty of Media and Communication, the University of Central Punjab when he launched his autobiography ‘Sisakti Muskrati Zindagi’ in a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Iqbal on 19 August 2018.
