500kg World War II bomb detonated in Frankfurt after massive evacuation

FRANKFURT: A bomb disposal team in German’s financial capital Thursday safely detonated an unexploded World War II bomb that had forced the evacuation of at least 25,000 residents.

The massive bomb, which is said to be around 1,100-lbs, thought to have been dropped during the Second World War. The corroded bomb was discovered during construction work late Wednesday.

Reports in German newspapers cited bomb disposal experts that the massive bomb could not be defused like many others found in Western European countries as there was an immediate risk of explosion. It had been unearthed right next to a children’s playground at a depth of about 6.5 feet.

Following the news of the WWII bomb in a residential area, the security officials evacuated all residents within a radius of 700 meters. At least 25,000 people of the densely populated area were then taken to an ice hockey stadium to wait till the safe detonation of the bomb. The restricted evacuation took place with ease in late-night curfew amid the Covid pandemic.

According to the German Fire services, the bomb had been detonated after covering it with nearly 40 truckloads of sand to minimize the damage in the neighborhood. The controlled explosion is said to be sounded like ‘thunder’ which caused a three meters deep and ten meters wide hole at the spot.

Let it be known that nearly seven WWII bombs were found and later diffused last year near Berlin. In the year 2017, at least 65,000 people were evacuated after a 1.4-tonne bomb was unearthed in Frankfurt – the biggest in Europe since 1945.
