CALIFORNIA: American rapper, actor Earl Simmons alias DMX Friday breathed his last at the age of 50 after he suffered a massive heart attack.
The Party Up singer was hospitalized last week when he suffered a heart attack in New York City, sources said. He collapsed at his residence late on April 2. International news agency claimed that he overdosed on drugs that triggered a cardiac arrest.
A statement released by his family stated we are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50-years-old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days. He was a warrior who fought till the very end. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever, the statement further added.
DMX started rapping in the early ’90s and entered the music world with It’s Dark as his debut album and Hell Is Hot in 1998, to both critical acclaim and commercial success, selling at least 251,000 copies within 5 days of release.
He later released his best-selling album, And Then There Was X, in the year 1999, which included the hit single Party Up, Where the Hood At? and X Gon Give It to Ya were also gone bonkers with major success.
Dark Man X also holds the title to be the first artist to debut an album at No. 1 five times in a row on the Billboard 200 charts.
The late rapper was also featured in a number of films including Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, and Last Hour. He also starred in the reality television series DMX: Soul of a Man.
The career of the five-time Billboard chart-topper had been marked by numerous legal troubles and prison time.
He was pleaded guilty in federal court to avoiding paying $1.7 million in taxes from 2000 to 2005 by shifting money among accounts belonging to managers and associates. He was imprisoned for one year.
The other criminal record included charges of animal cruelty, reckless driving, drug possession, weapons charges, and probation violations.
