Putin thinks Sputnik one-shot Covid vaccine ‘reliable as Russian AK-47’

MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin Thursday garnered international attention after comparing Russia’s Sputnik V Covid vaccine to Soviet assault rifle AK-47.

Putin revealed the strange comparison during a video conference with Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova. Russian one-shot Sputnik Light version of its COVID-19 vaccine, which shows at least 79.4 percent efficacy against the deadly virus and will cost $10 a dose, is as reliable as the country’s world-class Kalashnikov AK-47, he told Golikova.

The 68-year-old claimed that Russian vaccines are based on technologies and platforms that have been used literally for years. Gamaleya Institute’s product against the novel virus is very modern and up-to-date, and undoubtedly, this is the most reliable and the safest.

It is as reliable as an AK-47 and it wasn’t us who claimed that, European specialist termed this by acclaiming our world-class vaccine and I think that he is certainly right, Putin further emphasized.

He further revealed that Russia is the only country sharing vaccine production technology with other countries to help inoculate all of the population at the earliest.

Let it be known that Russia recently authorized its one-shot Sputnik Light version of the COVID vaccine. Single-dose jab will help vaccine supplies go further in countries with high infection rates, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) said today.
