Punjab IGP orders drug testing of all ranks under police reforms

LAHORE: Inspector General of Police Punjab Inam Ghani directed RPOs to conduct health profiling of officers and personnel to make the process of accountability more effective saying that any person taking drugs will not be part of the force in any capacity.

Under the Prime Minister’s Police Reforms Vision, IGP directed the Internal Accountability Bureau to tighten the noose so that the black sheep involved in the drug’s usage can be identified and dealt with as per the law.

Ghani recently chaired a meeting with top officials in which he directed to beef up all possible measures against anyone involved in ugly acts either as a fashion or extended habit. He ordered the regional police officers to prepare health profiling of all staff after conducting tests from authentic and standard health laboratories so that the reports made in the light of the results could not be challenged furthermore.

The command and field officers should monitor the process themselves by using all possible means to identify the drug addicts and also make sure that no official got named without proof, he said. Adding that the culprits would be asked to undergo rehabilitation on their own.

During the meeting, the officials also mulled that the initiative should not be restricted to the level of the lower grade policemen, and officers from the PSP should also be ‘questioned’ to find all culprits.

Top ranks officers feared that the trend of using addictive drugs like cocaine, ice, and alcohol was prevalent in most of the ranks and the discipline in the police force can only be maintained by launching a stern policy.

Officials also proposed that those facing psychological issues along with drug abuse should not be given sensitive or field assignments with weapons to avoid any mishap.

Earlier in April,  Inam Ghani took immediate action against officials of various ranks who have a criminal record. Chairing an important meeting, he ordered to remove from their post within 24 hours of this order all station house officers (SHOs) with a criminal record.

The IGP also decided that all police officials from the rank of constable to BS-21 will be liable to be suspended from service if a criminal case was registered against them.

Under the policy rules, the head of a region and district was authorised to suspend officials from constables to the rank of inspector, while an IGP issued orders in the case of a deputy superintendent of police and superintendent of police. For the suspension of officers of senior ranks, the case was referred to the establishment division.
